Mentor Texts

January 26 - Poetry

This is another example of poetry that I used during my first practicum. It is the poem In Flanders Fields, but in French. I hadn't done any poetry during my practicum and it wasn't in the plan. So as a hook, or rather an introduction at the start of our lesson on Remembrance Day, I paired the students up and distributed this copy of the poem to have the students look and appreciate the poem in French, which the French immersion students hadn't previously done. They really enjoyed the activity. Together we took up the word choices we made. Then, I collected their sheets and had a different student read each line of the poem. While we didn't write any poetry during my time in the class, it was a nice way of integrating poetry.

January 19 - Non-narrative/Non-fiction

Below is a link to a mentor text I used for grade 11 French immersion during my first practicum.

As we discussed in class, there are many applications for this text. Our group decided it would be best used to demonstrate newspaper article writing.

It would make sense to analyze the text by using it as a model to show what gets included in a newspaper article. It is a good example of how newspaper articles present the most pertinent information first, and subsequently add details. The students could then draft their own articles on a given event, following this model.
